David Helmer, 152 Pounds, Langley, Senior
2009 All-Beltway Wrestler of the Year
The DigitalSports All-Beltway Wrestler of the Year, 152-pound Langley senior David Helmer rewrote the Virginia record books in his astounding career. He is a four-time Liberty District champion, four-time Northern Region champion and two-time Virginia AAA State champion.
Helmer was 50-1 last season, with his only loss coming by 4-2 decision to nationally-ranked wrestler from Perry, Okla. at the Midwest Classic in Kansas City, Miss. In that tournament, he beat a three-time Oklahoma state champion and the defending Kansas state champion. Helmer was also undefeated at the Lone Star Duals in Texas over three years and was a two-time AI Dupont Champion in Wilmington, Del.
He has the most career wins in Saxon history with a record at 161-16 and led Langley to four team titles in his tenure. The Saxons have won the last nine Liberty District team championship overall. He won the NOVA Classic as a freshman and sophomore and did not compete after that. Helmer was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Virginia Chapter and will wrestle in the collegiate ranks at Northwestern University. USA Wrestling Magazine has him listed as the No. 9 senior — and No. 17 wrestler — in the U.S. at 152.
