Stephen Richards, Langley, Sophomore
2009 All-Beltway Boys Swimming First Team
At the Northern Region meet, Langley sophomore Stephen Richards finished second in the 100-yard individual medley – falling only to Madison All-American Sean Fletcher — third in the 100-yard backstroke and was on the second-place 200-yard medley relay team. But at the Virginia AAA State meet, Richards cemented his All-Beltway status. In all four events in which he competed, he improved his finishing position from where he placed in prelims.
Most notably, in the 100-yard breaststroke, he qualified in sixth place. But swimming out of Lane 7, Richards not only won the race and state title, but set an all-time state record at :57.15 seconds, an automatic All-American time.
Earlier, he was on the 200-yard medley relay team that improved its place from seventh to fourth between prelims and the finals. He also was an automatic All-American in the 200-yard individual medley, moving his position from fifth to second. And, lastly, in the 400-yard freestyle relay, his team moved up from eighth to fifth. Largely thanks to Richards, the Saxons finished in third place in team scoring.
