Gymnastics: Liberty District Championships

By Angela Watts

(Look below the story to find dozens of video highlights from Monday’s competition.)

As Langley junior Emily Bullen sat huddled with her teammates on Stone Bridge‘s rigid gym floor, she knew she had a chance to win her first Liberty District individual event championship. The first announcement was for the floor exercise, which she won with a score of 9.425.

When it happened, Bullen said her thought was a simple: “Yes!”

The bigger picture hadn’t even begun to develop.

Then she won the individual title on the vault, too, at 9.400. Bullen said she thought that was great, too. For a minute.

Then she fully realized just how amazing it was.

“I was sitting there and it took a minute, but then I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I might have won the all-around title, too!’ Bullen said. “It was unreal. I was just so excited. I just came out here tonight wanting to do the best I could. But I had no idea it would end like this.”

It ended, of course, with Bullen claiming her first all-around championship, besting two-time defending all-around champion Caroline Grady of Thomas Jefferson in the process. Grady finished third in the all-around, with W.T. Woodson senior Diane Liskey capturing second and Thomas Jefferson junior Kelly Watson taking fourth.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Bullen said. “And Caroline Grady … she’s amazing. It feels extra special to beat her because she is such a great gymnast.”

Grady did win the individual title on the bars with a score of 9.400 and, even better, helped her team capture the Liberty District championship. It proved only the fourth time in the past nine years that Langley, which finished second, did not win the team title. The Saxons won Liberty District championships in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007.

“We are a really deep team,” Grady said. “And I think what separates us from other teams that have one or two club gymnasts is that we have really good people at the four, five and six spots, even. So there are some events where we’re posting scores that are all above an 8.0, which is really good for us. It gives us an opportunity if someone messes up, then there is still the rest of the team ready to go.

“I know that my sophomore year we thought we had a shot at it and my junior year we were going for it again, so it feels good to finally get it. It’s real exciting.”

Grady, on an admitted off night, still managed to place in the top four in three of the four individual events Monday. And quickly the standout senior turned her focus to the upcoming Northern Region meet.

“I’d just like to go out and hit four-for-four, ya know?” she said. “I want to do what I know I’m capable of doing.”

The only other individual winner of the night was Liskey, who scored a meet-best 9.450 on the beam. She was rock-solid on a standing back tuck during her routine, the only competitor to complete the difficult skill.

Still, this night belong to Bullen.

“I didn’t compete every event at every meet this season because I’ve had some back injuries in the past,” Bullen said. “So we were trying to save my back so I’d be able to be at my best by districts … and I guess it worked!”

Boys’ Varsity Basketball: No. 4 Langley 60, McLean 49

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for video highlights full highlights and post-game interviews from Friday’s game.)

During the third quarter of Langley’s 60-49 win at McLean Friday night, the opposing student-sections, who were packed so full students were left sitting on each others’ laps, rattled the Highlander gymnasium with various chants..

The one that rang loudest — and most true — was the resounding “M-V-P” after each respective basket by Saxon senior Ryan Davenport and Highlander senior Tarek Ammoury.

A 28-26 Langley lead at the half quickly evolved into a third-period shootout between arguably the two best players in the Liberty District.

Ammoury’s nine points in the quarter were slightly bested by Davenport’s 12, and allowed the Saxons (14-2 overall, 6-2 Liberty District) to stretch the lead to 48-40 by quarter’s end.

“I was feeling pretty good with my shot in the first half,” said Davenport, who needs 63 more points to break the all-time Langley career scoring record of 1,204 points. “I made a couple threes, so I felt pretty good from outside. Second half, I was looking for my shot a little bit more than the first half.

“There were some opportunities to shoot the ball, I let it go and, fortunately, they all went in. It was fun.”

Davenport scored 21 of his game-high 24 points in the second and third quarters collectively, but it was Langley Coach Travis Hess who may have proved most valuable after all. Hess made a late-game, defensive adjustment that helped hold McLean scoreless in the fourth quarter until just 3 minutes, 23 seconds remained.

“During the fourth quarter, we switched into a diamond-and-one, like a box-and-one,” Davenport said. “That’s how we shut down Tarek last year. Tarek didn’t really hurt us in the first game this year — he had about 10 or 12 points. But this was Tarek in vintage form, he played really well throughout the game.

“When we switched to the triangle-and-one … Tarek just couldn’t get the ball. Barrett Hunter, who was the one on Tarek, does a great job guarding him and I think he deserves a lot of credit for the fourth quarter.”

Ammoury, whose team-high 22 points would have likely been higher had it not been for first-half foul trouble, agreed that the change in strategy hurt him.

“Man, they ran that box-and-one,” Ammoury said. “They did that my sophomore and junior year and we lost all four times.”

Still, this rematch of the Dec. 21 game, which was decided McLean guard Peter Brosnan’s three-pointer with :4.1 seconds to play, lived up to its billing.

“I’ve played in Langley-McLean game now for three years, and the one thing you always know: the gym is going to be packed,” Davenport said. “There are going to be so many people, and you’re going to be really excited to play the game before the game. And you have to calm yourself down and say ‘It’s just a basketball game.’

“This year there was more on the line because both teams have really good district records … We showed in the second half that we have a lot of poise. We stuck with it and got a nice win.”

McLean, which has lost four of its last six games, needs to string some Liberty District wins together quickly in order to avoid a difficult district tournament draw next month.

“We’re going to try and have an enjoyable practice [tomorrow],” said Highlander Coach Kevin Roller, who is 9-7 in his first season at the helm. “Basketball, every possession, tests people’s composure. And all I know how to do is tell them, ‘Let’s get back to work, let’s keep getting better, let’s keep having fun.’ And we’ll get ready to play Tuesday night.”

Tuesday night is a district game against Thomas Jefferson, which McLean defeated, 62-57, on Jan. 4.

Girls’ Varsity Basketball: Langley 43, McLean 37

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for video highlights and post-game interviews from Friday’s game.)

On Langley’s team roster, senior Kate Hansan is listed as standing 5-feet, 3-inches tall.

That is a lie. Or, at least, an extreme exaggeration.

Hansan readily admits she is only 4-feet-11, which often makes her the shortest player on the court by a visible margin.

But the Saxons’ pocket-sized point guard could not have been larger in the first half of Friday’s game at McLean, scoring 10 of her game-high 13 points to lead Langley to a season sweep of rival McLean, 43-37, in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

“Last game, I hit a three for the first time in a while,” Hansan said. “And I had all the confidence that I could shoot the ball well today. And after I hit my first two, I just kept shooting and they fell for me tonight.”

In a remarkably physical contest, the Saxons put the clamps on the Highlander offense early and held them to just two first-half field goals.

“It was really intense because you would get the ball and then just get hit,” McLean guard Andie Romness said. “You’d get it again and you would then just get hit. You just had to keep going and push through it.”

Having made four times that many baskets in the first half themselves, Langley held a 21-11 advantage at the break.

In response, the Highlanders (10-6 overall, 5-3 Liberty District) rallied behind freshman Romness in a late surge — much as the Saxons utilized the services of freshman Audrey Dotson in a 45-38 overtime win at McLean on Dec. 21. Romness scored seven of her team-high nine points in the second half as the Highlanders cut the lead to two points on four different occasions in the fourth quarter.

“[I used] my speed and just pushed through them to get the basket,” Romness said.

But despite having possession the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead on three of those four opportunities, McLean failed to capitalize, and Langley (9-6, 6-2) was able to pull away in the games’ final moments.

“We held it together as a team and kept each other going,” Hansan said. “We knew that if we stopped them on defense we always have a chance to put the lead back up. We had huge free throws by Rachel [Warrick] at the end and people started knocking down shots after we went cold for a little bit.

“We knew that if we kept shooting the ball and kept playing like we had been, we would end up on top.”

Boys’ Basketball: Langley 48, Madison 46 in Overtime

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

**Game highlights, followed by video interviews, are avaiilable at the bottom of the article**

The Liberty District battle between No. 5 Madison (11-2) and No. 4 Langley (12-1) on Tuesday featured such staunch defensive play that literal minutes passed at times without either team scoring. But ultimately it was the host Saxons who prevailed in overtime for their eighth straight win, 48-46, thanks to timely runs and superb play by senior forward Ryan Davenport.

“I knew this was going to be our toughest game of the season by far, and it definitely was our toughest game that we’ve played,” Davenport said. “That game truly wasn’t over until the buzzer rang. It was one of those games where you had to fight to the end, and even more because it was in overtime.”

Langley held the control early, scoring 15 first-quarter points while limiting the Warhawks to just seven. As the game wore on though, Madison effectively slowed the game offensively and was able to take the Saxons out of their rhythm.

“I told [the team], if they’re patient our shots will fall,” Madison Coach Chris Kuhblank said. “It’s the basketball gods — if you take a shot off of one pass, even if they are your best shooters, they don’t go in. When you work a little bit, for some reason they go in … That’s the law of basketball.”

The Warhawks limited Langley to just 11 points in the second and third quarters combined, including a span in which the Saxons were scoreless for seven minutes, 48 seconds. Madison, meanwhile, posted 25 points over the two-period span. It then closed the third quarter on an 11-0 run to enter the final period with a 32-26 lead. Only three different Langley players hit a field goal in the game.

“They did a great job pressuring us and playing help-side defense,” Davenport said, “Drew Smerdinksi did a good job on me. He was pressuring me the whole time. And if you got by one of their guys, they had a lot of guys in the paint to help.

“We weren’t hitting our outside shots. So, when you can’t get inside and you aren’t hitting your outside shots, you’re not going to score on offense.”

Davenport, though, took control of the game’s final frame, scoring seven of his team’s 13 points in the quarter, including the go-ahead jumper from the elbow with just over a minute remaining in regulation to put the Saxons in front, 39-37.

“I was really proud of my teammates,” he said, “We all just sat down and said, ‘We’re going to come back and win this together.’ We all just had confidence in each other. I was really proud of my teammates for playing hard out there.”

On the ensuing Madison possession senior forward Scott LeDuc was fouled away from the ball by Langley junior forward Thomas Kody. LeDuc, awarded a one-and-one, sank both free-throws to tie the game at 39 with :44.1 seconds left. LeDuc’s 12 points tied him with junior Omi Ogolo for the team-high.

In the waning seconds of regulation, Davenport looked to create a shot, but was guarded tightly still by Smerdinski and was forced into an off-balance, three-pointer that ricocheted errantly from the rim as time expired.

“I thought we did a tremendous job on Davenport,” Kuhblank said. “He was frustrated. I know he had 23, but he took like 30 shots to get it. I was very pleased with our defense.”

But the overtime belonged to Langley and to Davenport. The senior scored seven more of that game-high 23 points in the extra quarter, including converting a half-court steal into a layup that extended the Saxons’ lead to 44-41.

“I thought they were going to get an over-and-back call,” Davenport said while reenacting the play. “Then I stopped for a second and realized that [the Madison guard] was holding the ball out a little bit, so I figured I should make an attempt at it.

“It was a close call because if I missed it, I would get called for a foul and they would go to the free throw line. I took a chance and it ended up paying off. In close games, small plays like that make a big difference.”

Moments later, with the Saxons ahead by one, Kody sank two critical free throws to extend the Langley lead to three points — all eight of his points for the game came couresy of free throws — and then Davenport followed with two more of his own. The Saxons were a flawless 10-for-10 from the stripe in the fourth quarter and overtime to help secure their win.

“I thought it was going to be a dogfight,” Kuhblank said. “We’re trying to win our games at home and steal them on the
road. Good teams put themselves in a position to win, and great teams
find a way to win. The last couple games we found a way to win. Tonight, we didn’t.

“I’m disappointed in the loss, but I didn’t think anyone was going to run the table in our district and now nobody is, because nobody is undefeated.”

These two teams will play again Feb. 7 at Madison. The Warhawks are 36-5 at home in the last three-and-a-half seasons and boast a 5-0 home record this year.
