Lee senior Frank Holloway, Jr. put his team on his back in its Northern Region first round match-up with Langley as they rallied from a 13-point deficit for a dramatic, 55-53 victory.

“It feels good,” said Holloway, who finished with a game-high 25 points. “It was a team effort. We were down the whole game, fought back, worked as a team … knocked down shots down the stretch [and] came out with the win.”

Added Lancers’ Coach Michael Harris: “Everybody played extremely well.”

Saxon seniors Barrett Hunter (nine points) and Thomas Kody (eight) got Langley off to a hot start, combining for 12 points in the first quarter.

But three-point shots by Lancer juniors Walter Griffin (14) and Deonta Gatlin (11) kept the game close, 18-14.

And Saxon senior Jack McLindon appeared to break the game open in the second quarter when he connected on two three-pointers of his own to increase Langley’s lead to 13 points.

Still, Lee kept hustling and closed the gap to 33-25 by half time.

It was in that second half, however, that Holloway was awoken.

Holloway dropped 11 points in the third quarter alone as the Lancers pulled within one point early in the quarter before Saxon senior Derek Baker (12 points) ended their run with a mid-range jumper. Langley’s control of the game was slowly slipping, but it still held a slim, 43-40 lead entering the final period.

In the last quarter, Holloway finished what he set out to do — lead his squad to a sweet comeback victory.

Lancer senior Yoonis Abdulle also played well down the stretch. With his team trailing by three points with about two minutes to play, Abdulle entered the game for the first time, quickly stole the ball and finished with a break-away layup.

Moments later Griffin gave the Lancers their first lead since the score had stood at 3-2.

“That’s what Coach Harris always tells him to do: ‘Step up,'” Holloway said of Abdulle. “He was ready tonight [and] stepped up big for us.”

But the excitement had only just begun.

With less than :20 seconds to play, Kody hit a lay up for Langley to knot the score at 53.

Griffin wasted no time getting the ball down court, but missed a layup. Holloway, however, did not miss the rebound. He scooped up the loose ball and was fouled on his put back attempt with :07.4 remaining.

It was the moment of truth for Holloway: The game was tied and the host fans were in a frenzy. He had two free throw attempts … and both sailed cleanly through the net.

“I’m used to the pressure by now,” Holloway said. “I definitely wasn’t trying to go home tonight.”

With the victory, Lee advances to face Westfield at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinal round.

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Helmer Takes Title
— Langley senior David Helmer — committed to Northwestern — wins the Virginia AAA State wrestling champion at 152 lb., his second-straight state title. He finished 52-1 this season and 161-16 in his career.
Martino Repeats — Battlefield 112-lb. wrestler Beau Martino — ranked first in the state — for the second straight year, beat Fauquier’s Ryan Hunsberger — ranked second — in the district, region, and state finals. He is 7-2 all-time against his rival.
High Degree of Difficulty — Viking junior guard Django Degree scored 19 points — including a four-point play — and had highlight-reel blocks in Loudoun Valley’s 75-50 win over Osbourn in the Cedar Run District tournament.
Speedy Gonzales — Friendly’s Mike Gonzales shows his tough defense on back-to-back plays
converting two steals into baskets, the second of which a basket and a
foul. His defense pushed the Patriots to a 56-43
victory and the win clinched the P.G. County 3A/2A/1A League
regular-season championship.
Porter Bats Batts — In last year’s Dulles District final, Freedom-South Riding guard Meixandra Porter partially blocked a last-second shot by Loudoun County that was caught and re-shot for a buzzer-beating Raider win. This year, Porter left little doubt as she blocked a would-be game-tying 3-pointer into the third row.
Record-Setting Fox — Georgetown Prep’s Brady Fox beats his own Metros record in the 100-yard Butterfly
with a time of :48.71 second. Metros is largely considered one of the most
competitive tournaments in the nation and Fox led Georgetown Prep to
the boys’ championship.
Smith Dunk Sparks Comeback — After weathering an early storm, Lackey fought back from a 20-point, second-quarter deficit to down North Point, 86-77, in overtime. Charger senior Amir Smith cut the lead to six points with this first-half, horn-beating baseline dunk.

No. 10 — King Kong Ain’t Got Nothing on Me!
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Central 189-lb. wrestler Denzel Washington, after only wrestling for one month in his career before the start of this season, won the County championship with a second-round pin of Northwest’s Lloyd Winter.

No. 9 — Hail to the Kingsbury
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In the last week of the regular season, Northern trailed McDonough by as many as 12 points in the third quarter. Patriot guard Haley Kingsbury, though, swung the momentum in Northern’s favor with this half-court heave to beat the third-quarter horn.

No. 8 — Sherwood Four-est
Montgomery County, Maryland  — Sherwood senior Steven Gamble became the only wrestler in Montgomery County to win four County titles when he won the 160-lb. class last week. Twenty five wrestlers had won three County championships before Gamble’s quartet was completed.

No. 7 — Deep Cooking
W.C.A.C., Maryland/D.C. — DeMatha sophomore guard Quinn Cook hit four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 25 points in the Stags’ 68-65 win that clinched the top seed heading into next week’s W.C.A.C. tournament. Cook only missed four field goals on the night.

No. 6 — Clipper 56
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Oxon Hill heavyweight Nigel Cross extended his winning streak to 56 matches with his victory at the Prince George’s County championships last week.

No. 5 — County-Winning Takedown
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Trailing by one point before a restart with :13 seconds remaining in the third period, Northern senior Jeff Williams takes down top-seeded Brent Mowry of La Plata at the SMAC championships in the 145 lb. weight class.

No. 4 — Greatest Show on Surf
Northern Region, Virginia — The Robinson boys’ swim & dive team won its seventh-straight Virginia AAA State championship at the Freedom Center in Manassas, Va. Only Great Bridge wrestling, which won 16 of 17 state championships from 1989-2005, has longer state-winning streaks in Virginia High School League history.

No. 3 — O.P.3.
Prince William County, Virginia — Osbourn Park became the first Prince William team to three-peat when it edged Kellam for the third-straight season at the Virginia AAA State gymnastics meet at West Potomac on Saturday. Yellow Jacket junior Megan McDonald paced her team with a second-place finish in the individual competition.

No. 2 — Broad Run to Region II
Loudoun County, Virginia — Broad Run forward Will Field pulls down a rebound, whips an outlet pass to senior Breon Earl who drives in for the game-winner only to pass under the basket to junior
Kevin McGaughey, who bobbles and then puts it in to beat the buzzer for
a 53-52 win. The Spartans advanced to knock off regular-season champion Dominion
in the finals and earn a bye in the Region II quarterfinals and a home
semifinal date this week.

No. 1 — National Record for Fletcher
Northern Region, Virginia — Madison senior Sean Fletcher broke the all-time national high-school record in the 100-yard butterfly (:47.08) at the Virginia AAA State championships on Saturday. Almost as impressively, he only had a seven-minute break until he competed in the 100-yard freestyle final and was .02 second from breaking the state record in that event. The original record holders were Nate Dusing (Covington Catholic High School, Texas; University of Texas; 2000 and 2004 Olympics), who set the record in 1997, and Austin Staab (Westerville, Ohio; Stanford) tied it in 2007.

Gymnastics: 2009 VHSL State Individual Championships

** Full results listed below!

As Osbourn Park’s team huddled together on the floor awaiting the results from this weekend’s Virginia State Gymnastics Team Championships, there were a few moments on immense anxiety.

And, Coach Monica Brown said, impatience, too.

The Yellow Jackets, the two-time defending champions, thought they had narrowly edged Eastern Region power Kellam for their third straight title.

But the Knights’ coach had petitioned the judges to have the scores from the uneven parallel bars re-evaluated.

And Brown knew that if an error had been found, it could have meant the difference between first and second place.

“We knew we probably had them by a tenth of a point, but when they made that inquiry we didn’t know if that could change things,” she said. “So we really weren’t sure until they finally announced it.”

An in that instant, the anxiety turned to bliss. Osbourn Park did edge Kellam, 150.900-150.800, to become the first Prince William team to ever earn a three-peat.

The runner-up, each time, has been Kellam.

“The girls were so excited,” Brown said. “There were some tears of joy, and some sighs of relief, too. It was hard to wait through it all.

“But Kellam, really they are champions along with us. You can’t have a meet be that close and not feel that way.”

There was less drama — but equal excitement — surrounding the individual competition the next day, where Osbourn Park junior Megan McDonald took second in the All-Around competition behind Kellam’s Kirsten Strausbaugh, who also won the title in 2008.

McDonald did so by placing second on both vault (9.850) and bars (9.850), fourth on floor (9.625) and seventh on beam (9.650).

“It means a lot,” she said. “I didn’t even think I’d be a contender the past two years, but this year I thought I could actually do well, and second place is a big thing to me.”

Ice Hockey: 2009 NVSHL All Star Game

South-Central All Stars Top North-West Squad, 7-5

A six-goal offensive barrage in the third period helped the South-Central All Stars outlast the North-West All Stars, 7-5, at the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League All Star game on Wednesday night at the Ashburn Ice House in a showcase of the top talent from around Northern Virginia. Woodbridge’s Seve Cordova was named the most valuable player for South-Central, scoring two of his squad’s six goals in the final period.

The South-Central All-Stars faced a 3-0 deficit after the first period and were down 4-1 at the end of the second. It was in that second period, however, that South-Central coach Jim Fullem saw the complexion of the game start to change.

“You could kind of see the momentum shift,” he said. “We just kept the pressure on them. I think that we surprised them a little bit. Once you start getting the puck to the net, they are going to start going in.”

All four of South-Central’s lines scored in the third, with Bishop O’Connell’s Nicholas Guerere, Battlefield/Brentsville’s Casey Dunn, Paul VI’s Adam Kosna and Forest Park’s Alex Clark all adding to Cordova’s two goals.

“You **** to keep giving cliches, but it was just absolute total team effort,” said Fullem, who coaches Forest Park. “Everybody chipped in. It was really nice to see. That’s what these things are all about.”

Langley’s Brett Hatfield was named the MVP of the North-West team, allowing only one goal in the second period with 14 saves.

The NVSHL playoffs begin on Friday, with No. 12 Broad Run taking on No. 5 Chantilly, No. 9 Briar Woods going against No. 8 Madison, No. 10 Westfield playing No. 7 Langley and No. 11 Paul VI taking on No. 6 Woodbridge. Top-ranked Stone Bridge, No. 2 Herndon, No. 3 Forest Park and No. 4 Bishop O’Connell all have byes in the first round.

On a night where offense was hard to come by for all parties involved, it was the play of senior standouts Stephen Stepka of W.T. Woodson and Derek Baker of Langley that propelled their teams into Friday’s Liberty District championship game.

Stepka’s numbers weren’t gaudy in the top-seeded Cavaliers’ 35-33 victory over fourth-seeded Madison in the first game of the semifinal doubleheader, but his presence was.

Baker, meanwhile, single-handedly accounted nearly half of third-seeded Langley’s total points, dropping 21 — including four, three-pointers — in a 43-35 victory over seventh-seed McLean in the nightcap.

“I just think that’s the way it is in our district,” W.T. Woodson Coach Doug Craig said of the low-scoring contests.

“If you want to see racing up-and-down the floor and scores in the 80s and dunking on everybody … that’s not what the Liberty District is. Most teams play pretty good man-to-man defense and try to execute in the half court and control the tempo, and sometimes that’s just the way the games turn out.

“They can end up being 35-33 rugby scrums.”

Such patient and deliberate offensive play started in the first game, where the Cavaliers led the Warhawks by a narrow, 7-4 margin after one quarter of play.

With the score tied at 23 the end of three quarters, Stepka found himself whistled for his fourth personal foul just :24 seconds into the fourth. Stepka was forced to sit for more than two minutes of game time, and during that stretch he could only watch as Madison, led by seniors Omi Ogolo (team-high 11 points) and Will Clarkson (nine) jumped to a 27-23 lead.

But Stepka made a big block on his first possession back in the mix, and scored on the ensuing play to pull the Cavaliers within two. He then took a feed from senior Ben Pochekailo for another bucket to again knot the score at 27 with 3 minutes, 20 seconds to play.

Stepka, the Liberty District Player of the Year, scored six of his team-high 10 points in the game’s final minutes. That, combined with a a key three-pointer and a big block from Steven Noe with just :02.4 remaining sealed W.T. Woodson’s victory.

“Stephen’s our best player and everyone knows it,” Cavaliers’ Coach Doug Craig said. “We were going to try to get him the ball down the stretch when the game was tight. We were trying to get it to him all night but they did a very good job defensively on him. But, to Stephen’s credit, he didn’t let the first 28 minutes bother the last four minutes that he played.

“And that’s what you need — and expect — from your best player.”

It was a different scenario in the night’s second game, where Langley enjoyed a more generous seven-point lead at the end of one quarter, eight-point lead at half time and an 11-point advantage midway through the third.

But the Highlanders battled back, narrowing the gap to 32-25 with 4:51 to play on a fastbreak feed from Curtis Symonds to Grayson Dahl.

But like he did all night, Baker responded. He came right back down the floor and hit his fourth three-pointer of the game — two more were made but waived off — to ignite the Saxon fans and instill confidence in his teammates.

“Derek Baker has a huge green light,” Langley Coach Travis Hess said. “Really, we want all of our guys to shoot. That’s why they’re out there on the floor, because we think they can score and get to the basket. Everyone gives us something different and the kids understand those roles.

“Tonight, Derek was just on … he came to play tonight. The three he hit to answer their run was huge.”

But McLean wasn’t done yet. Senior guard Peter Brosnan (team-high 11 points) tightened his defense and harassed the Saxons into multiple turnovers, and a three-pointer by senior Zach Altman with 2:51 to play cut Langley’s lead to 37-34.

“We were a little nervous to be honest with you,” Hess said. “We were up 11 and kind of squandered the lead away. I asked our coaches if they thought we got a little complacent in the fourth quarter … but we didn’t feel that we did. We thought we were doing the right thing.

“It was just a testament to them. They made it a three-point game and they had their opportunities, but the shots didn’t fall for them.

“We were lucky to get out of here with a win.

Now that focus turns to Friday’s championship game, which will be held at 5:45 p.m. at South Lakes. Langley and W.T. Woodson split their regular-season games, with the Saxons winning, 52-50, on Jan. 16 and the Cavaliers returning the favor, 54-48, on Feb. 10.

“It’ll be a war on Friday night just like it was tonight,” Craig said. “Everybody you play at this point — from the district semifinals through the state finals — is good. So you’d better play your game, control what you can and try to be at your best.”
