By Angela Watts

one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week, found in a video
player just below the story.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Briggs earned Velocity’s Featured Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over visiting Robinson in eight innings on Thursday.

Not only did Briggs throw an excellent game — striking out 13 Rams’ batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second inning and fanning two batters in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings — she was provided the game-winning hit.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Briggs took an outside pitch to deep right field to score senior second baseman
Chelsea Roseberry for a 1-0, walk-off
victory. Roseberry had reached on a single in the game’s first
additional inning and moved to second when senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic drew a walk.

With the victory Herndon improved to 10-3 overall on the season with six regular-season games remaining.

Boys’ Lacrosse: W.T. Woodson 11, Langley 9

By Phil Murphy

**Check before the story for complete highlights. Re-live Woodson’s win in 11 minutes, plus post-game.**

After W.T. Woodson’s 11-9 home win on Thursday over Langley, which was previously unbeaten in Northern Region-play, Cavalier Coach Jon FitzGerald humbly accepted the congratulations of his players as they cleared the field at Pat Cunningham Stadium.

Amidst a sea of supporters, the only coach in Woodson lacrosse history reluctantly admitted that tonight’s win was No. 300 in his illustrious career.

“It’s been a long time,” said FitzGerald, who has not had a losing season since starting the Cavaliers’ program in 1988, “I know it’s a lot of wins, like 15 a year – 14 or 15 a year – since my first year. It feels good … like maybe I’m doing something right.”

Three state, four Northern Region and 11 Liberty District championships, including last year’s league title, would support the theory. It was also some impressive impromptu math from the English teacher, FitzGerald.

But it was his team who proved most impressive on Thursday, especially in the second half. Holding a 4-3 lead entering the third quarter, Woodson opened the fourth with three goals in the first 1 minute, 13 seconds of the period.

“[Coach] was saying, ‘Don’t give up, just keep on shooting. These guys are going to come back,’ ” said senior captain Ross Fernandez, an All-Region caliber goalkeeper who switched to attack before the season and totaled three goals in the game. “We just had to keep on shooting. We knew these guys were going to come back, but we had to come back with the same intensity.”

Added FitzGerald: “We said, ‘We smell some blood, so let’s try and go for the ****.’ “

But Langley, led by Coach Earl Brewer, retaliated in a fashion fitting of its 7-1 record entering the game. Brewer immediately called a time out to stop the flurry, and the Saxons never let the Cavalier margin grow to larger than the four goals. The Saxons also countered with an even more compact, three-goal spurt of their own in the fourth quarter to threaten to spoil the Woodson win.

Langley seniors Greg Bentz, Patrick Pembroke and Owen Masters each scored in a 34-second span to cut Woodson’s lead to 10-9 with 6:07 remaining.

“They’re a good team,” said FitzGerald, whose team has posted four consecutive victories. “I think, in hindsight, we shouldn’t have been exited as were when they called time out early third quarter. I think we should have just kept our composure.

“Physics says what goes up must come down. We should have kept a more even keel.”

But physics also states that every action warrants and equal — but opposite — reaction.

Enter Cavalier junior John Gargiulo and sophomore Davis Mayberry.

With just under three minutes left in regulation, the pair teamed up to add the game’s final goal and secure the Woodson victory on Senior Night.

“Mayberry was behind the cage,” said Gargiulo (three goals, one assist), pointing to the west goal. “He caught the ball. It was a little transition drill, everyone was ball-watching and I cut behind everyone. Mayberry came up and took a good hit – he doesn’t normally do that – but he took a good hit. Then he gave a decent pass to me.

“I had the easy job. He had the hard job. It was Mayberry on that one.”

Then, after Coach FitzGerald had earned the pivotal district win, reached his milestone and already provided lessons in physics and math, he offered possibly his greatest point of on-field perspective: History.

“We found ourselves tonight,” said FitzGerald, who was discretely described in the game’s program as having “well over 200” wins. “We kind of established who we are. For the first time this year, we beat a good team. I had a hunch that we’d play well because we work hard. But to beat Langley – a team like that – the way we did … I was very happy with it.

“We’re like the anti-Woodson team. Woodson teams of the past have won the early games but, for one reason or another, we’d end up losing in the state semis. This team, we lost those early games, but hopefully we’ll win those games at the end.”

Boys’ Soccer: Langley 2, Fairfax 1

By Sam Dowell
Fairfax High Senior, DigitalSports
Intern

For the second game in a row Fairfax conceded a late goal to put another mark in the loss column.

This time the heartbreaking goal came courtesy of Langley senior striker Rahul Chaudhry in overtime. Chaudhry got an assist on the play courtesy of freshman midfielder Jeff Cochran on a throw-in. Cochran was able to throw the ball in all the way to the middle of the box, making the Saxons’ throw-ins just as dangerous as their corner kicks.

Chaudhry was able to run underneath the ball and head it past Rebels’ senior goal keeper Sean Goudarzi for the game-winning shot. With the win, Langley improved to 5-0-2 on the season while Fairfax fell to 3-8 overall.

Langley struck first in Tuesday’s game, getting on the scoreboard just about a minute before half time. Saxon senior forward Graham Oxley crossed the ball to sophomore midfielder Jan Gundersen on a break away, and Gunderson was able to settle a put it in to the left side of the net.

The equalizer came midway through second half on a header by Rebel senior forward Adam Ballard. Ballard was moved from defense to striker in the second half, a move that seemed to pay off for Fairfax Coach Kyle Morrisey. The goal marked Ballard’s third of the season and his second via a header.

Senior defender Lonnie Carter picked up the assist on the play on a direct kick from 50-yards out.

VHSL Announces New Redistricting Plan for Northern Region

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Two current members of the Northern Region — and two who would like to be — plead their cases before the Virginia High School League’s Redistricting and Reclassification committee Monday in Charlottesville.

But only the two current Northern Region schools — Hayfield and Stone Bridge — won the initial battle.

Hayfield, which is currently a member of the Patriot District, appealed its
continued placement there and requested to be moved to the National
District. And Stone Bridge, which currently a member of the Liberty District, appealed its
proposed move to the Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and
requested to remain a member of the Liberty District.

Both requests were granted.

That was not the case for Heritage (AA Dulles District) and Loudoun Valley (AAA Cedar Run) of
Loudoun County, which appealed their proposed placement into the Cedar Run
District and, instead, requested to join the Northern Region. Heritage
asked to join as a member of the Liberty District; Loudoun Valley as a
member of the Concorde District.

Both of those requests were denied.

The only other change to the current alignment is Fairfax, which had previously been
moved out of the Concorde District, where it currently plays, and into the Liberty District.

A school still has one last opportunity to appeal the decisions that were made on Monday. It may appeal the R&R committee’s decision to the VHSL’s Executive Committee. No hearing will be held, but the Executive Committee will review the written record of the original appeal and issue its decision. The Executive Committe will meet May 7, and the final plan will go into effect July 1, 2009.

As it stands today, the most recent proposal for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is as follows:

Concorde District
Centreville (2283)
Chantilly (2835)
Herndon (2190)

Velocity Player of the Week — April 14

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** DigitalSports videographer Phil Murphy sits down for a one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Player of the Week, found in a video player just below the story.

Langley senior center fielder Lindsay Brown blasted a two-run,
home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth inning last Thursday to
break open the tie and lead the Saxons to a 9-6 victory at Madison.

Langley (9-1, 4-0 Liberty) entered Monday’s district game at Stone Bridge having won eight consecutive ball games, including outscoring Thomas Jefferson, South Lakes and W.T. Woodson by a combined total of 79-3 in the three games prior to facing the Warhawks.

Brown, whose younger sister Brooke, a sophomore, picked up the win from the pitching circle on Thursday, has been a big part of the reason for success. Lindsay totaled seven hits during the teams’ 4-1 run through its spring tournament in Myrtle Beach, and has been on fire at the plate ever since.
