Boys’ Basketball: 35th Annual Capital Classic

By Angela Watts

** Check below each box score to find two separate video players with highlights from both Capital Classic games. Re-live the regional game in 9 minutes, and the national game in 8 minutes.**

Annandale senior Erik Etherly and T.C. Williams senior Anthony Winbush sat side-by-side chatting on the bench during Saturday’s 35th Annual Capital Classic at the University of Maryland Comcast Center.

And when Suburban teammate Austin Cooley from Bethesda Chevy-Chase went baseline midway through the fourth quarter for a nasty, alley-opp dunk that he was forced to stretch back with one hand to haul in —  and then throw down — the Northern Region pair leapt to their feet in celebration.

“Slam of the month!,” Etherly shouted.

And while it was certainly the best dunk of both of Saturday’s local and national Capital Classic games, the four Northern Region representatives — Etherly, Winbush, Mount Vernon senior Marquel De Lancey and Westfield senior Maurice Hubbard — had their share of highlights, too.

Etherly, in particular, sparkled in the second half of the afternoon’s first game, helping lead the Suburban All-Stars to a near-miraculous comeback over the District All-Stars in a 131-128 loss. The Suburban All-Stars trailed by as many as 19 points, but fought their way back and pulled within 111-110 with 4 minutes, 33 seconds to play on a one of Etherly’s four dunks.

The Suburban team never tied the game, but had a chance to send it to overtime with a three-point shot by Chase Smith of Eleanor Roosevelt, but it fell short at the buzzer to seal the game’s final margin.

Etherly finished tied for the team-high with 22 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line, adding eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Hubbard contributed six points, six rebounds and two steals for the Suburban squad, while Winbush finished with four points, three rebounds and one block.

“It was exciting,” Hubbard said. “It’s something I’ll definitely remember, and it’s a good way to finish my high school career. And it shows us just how much faster and stronger the game will be at the next level.”

De Lancey (five rebounds, two assists) was the Northern Region’s lone representative in the second, national game, which pitted the Capital All-Stars against the U.S. All-Stars in what turned out to be a big, 123-85 victory for the U.S. squad.

This year’s U.S. roster was highlighted by Maryland-bound Sean Mosley (16 points, six assists) from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and Duke-bound Olek Czyz (game-high 23 points) from Reno High in Nevada. Former U.S. players have included the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Ralph Sampson and Dominique Wilkins.

“I appreciate getting picked to play in the national game … it’s truly an honor,” said De Lancey, who will play next season at Old Dominion University. “I just wish I would have played better. But it shows me what I have to do, what I have to work on before next year. I have to get used to the speed of the game, and hit the weight room.”

In addition to their memories, all four area players left the game with hearty smiles and backpacks filled with free gear from Converse and the event’s title sponsor, Under Armour.

“This was a lot of fun,” Etherly said with a grin. “I’d say it probably ranks second only to the DigitalSports Showcase as far as this season’s highlights go.”

Baseball: Madison 10, Langley 0

By Jimmy Thomas

Check below the story for complete video highlights of Fridays game.

Madison baseball Coach Mark “Pudge” Gjormand said following Friday night’s game at Langley that he finally saw the cohesion he has been waiting for all year from his team.

The Warhawks were nearly flawless as they scored 10 runs, pounded out 16 hits and got six shutout innings from pitcher Jesse Jeter, who only surrendered two hits while striking out 13. Jeter did not allow a hit after the third inning, and stuck out eight of the games’
final 11 batters.

Warhawk seniors Kyle McIntyre and Casey Turner set the pace for Madison with back-to-back singles in the top half of the first inning. And after a Brig Tison walk, junior Alex Jacquez doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. Jeter then singled to  score Jacquez, pushing the Warhawks’ lead to 4-0.

As it turned out, Madison scored in every inning but the fourth, including getting two runs in the six inning when senior Colin Flaherty hit a two-run bomb to deep centerfield, pushing the score to 10-0. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run, “mercy” rule.

“I just think this group is going to get better and better,” Gjormand added. “We really have some good players … we really like our arms. We were really good defensively tonight but the bats really set the tone.”

Madison hosts South Lakes on Monday before traveling to Liberty District-leading Stone Bridge on Wednesday. Langley travels to face those same Bulldogs Monday night.

NOTE: Langley senior Nick Cafferky threw out the first pitch before Friday night’s game. On August 12th, while playing in the surf at Dewy Beach, Delaware. Cafferky broke his neck in the injury and remains paralyzed from the neck down. Due to Nick’s hard work and determination, he returned to complete his senior year with his friends at Langley on March 3rd. The entire Saxon baseball team and a number fans wore green-and-gold “Team Nick” T-shirts at the game in his honor.

Softball: Langley 9, Madison 6 in Two Extra Innings

By Angela Watts

** Check below the story for dozens of video highlights from Thursday’s game. **

Langley senior center fielder Lindsay Brown says she has total confidence in her younger sister, sophomore Brooke Brown, when she’s in the pitching circle.

Brooke says the same about Lindsay when she’s in the batting circle.

And after Thursday’s 9-6 victory over host Madison it was readily apparent that both have very good reason to be assured.

Brooke Brown entered the game in relief of sophomore Shannon Engel in the sixth inning and held host Madison scoreless through four innings of work, including working out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh with no outs.

If the Warhawks (9-2 overall, 3-1 Liberty District) had managed a run there, it would have ended the game in seven innings.

“Obviously if we would have scored a run with the bases loaded and no outs it would have been a different ballgame,” Madison Coach Wayne Martin said. “But still, it was a great game. Our games with Langley are always tough. So it’ll be another battle the next time we play, and then we’ll probably see them in Districts also. So there is a lot of softball ahead for both of us.”

There were two extra innings in this game as well, and it was Lindsay Brown who got to play the role of hero. The senior blasted a two-run, home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth inning to break open the tie and give the the Saxons (9-1, 4-0) an 8-6 advantage.

Langley’s next batter, senior third baseman Jam Mowery, followed suit, blasting a solo shot over the same part of the fence to provide the game’s final margin.

“In most of our close wins this year we’ve had to come from behind … so the girls don’t get rattled,” Langley Coach Bob Morrow said. “And the big thing is, I think we’ve got nine kids in the lineup who can hit, so we don’t have to have our No. 3-4 hitters up there. We’ve got a lot of kids who can hit the ball.”

That was true of both teams. There were four home runs hit during the game. Madison sophomore second baseman Kaila Conlon‘s two-run, fifth-inning shot over the left field fence was followed by a three-run, game-tying bomb over the centerfield fence by Langley senior first baseman Kim McMasters that knotted the score at 6 in the top of the seventh inning.

“In games like this you’re so tense and focused the whole time,” Lindsay Brown said. “It’s not until after the final out that you can just relax and enjoy it … but it feels great.”
