Varsity Baseball: Langley 12, McLean 1 (5 Innings)

**Check below the story for video highlights. Re-live the win in 7 minutes, 39 seconds.**

Almost nightly, a pitcher will have a momentary mental or physical lapse and throw 17 balls in a single inning.

But on McLean’s Senior Night, Langley junior Joey Zarella, the team-leader in walks allowed, threw a 69-pitch complete game and — in a matchless act of precision — recorded just 17 balls in the entire outing.

Zarella scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked none as the Saxons scored an abbreviated, five-inning victory over the Highlanders, 12-1, on the road on Thursday. Zarella faced only five batters more than the minimum in the win.

“I wasn’t worried about who I am facing or who was up at-bat,” said Zarella, who held McLean’s No. 4 through No. 9 batters to a combined 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts. “I just saw in the catcher’s glove and threw it. I wasn’t worried like, ‘I have to make this pitch,’ or anything. I was just loose out there.”

Added Langley Coach Jeff Ferrell: “We had been working some kinks out of his mechanics from a couple weeks ago. He’s been a lot more aggressive with his front side and it’s showing.

“He’s throwing strikes, he kept the ball down, outstanding movement with his off-speed … it’s the best I’ve ever seen.”

Beyond Zarella’s pin-point pitching, the Saxons pelted the ball offensively. They scored multiple runs in every inning except the fifth and sent fewer than six batters to the plate in only one inning — the first.

“I’ve been trying to take the ball to the opposite field,” said lead-off batter Daniel Bergamesca, a .196-hitter who finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. “I had a problem trying to pull off the ball. So I tried taking it opposite field and it worked out.”

Zarella helped his own cause at the plate, as well, adding a bases-clearing double in fourth. He finished 2-for-3 with 4 RBI.

The offensive surge was byproduct of a week-long focus on two-strike and two-out production, something the Saxons (12-7 overall, 9-5 Liberty District) had struggled with in recent weeks.

“We’d been striking out a lot this year,” said Ferrell, in his eighth season at the helm. “We haven’t been doing a good enough job with two strikes. We’ve seen some really good pitching — Stone Bridge and Madison. We got ourselves in a situation where we were going down with two strikes, not putting the all in play.

“That’s what we’ve worked on in practice the last few days.”

The one-sided road win ends a brief two-game skid for Langley, a 2007 Northern Regional semifinalist. Contrarily, McLean will need an offensive turnaround of its own during the early stages of next week’s Liberty District tournament if it hopes to extend its season. The Highlanders (14-6, 9-5) have scored just two runs in their last two regular-season games combined.

“For whatever reason, we’ve been probably a little tight for the last couple games,” McLean Coach John Thomas said acquiescently. “That comes from the top. The sky is not falling or anything, it’s just that we play a certain way. We pride ourselves on trying to say that we’re the tougher team every night. That’s how we got to 14-and-4, that’s how we beat a lot of teams.

“That hasn’t been there as much the last two nights. I’m not 100-percent sure why, but it’s something we’ll have to come together and try and see what happens … We’ll have to work on baseball, but we’ll also have to make sure that everyone is sticking together.”

Lacrosse Playoffs: Langley and Woodson to Meet in Liberty District Final

By Greg Young

**Video highlights are located in the two video players below. Complete highlights to be posted .**

After W.T. Woodson nearly lost to South Lakes and lost to Madison earlier in the year, the Cavaliers decided to re-evaluate their strategy. They made some personnel moves, and agreed to narrow the teams’ goals.

One of those new, simpler goals was to make the Liberty District tournament championship game, which W.T. Woodson accomplished with a 9-3 win over Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday in the first half of the Liberty District Semifinal double-header.

“We just worked a lot harder in practices,” said Woodson Coach Jon FitzGerald. “We’ve got a young team but if we play the way we are capable of playing, we can play with anyone.”

The Cavaliers got off to a quick start against the upset-minded Colonials, netting five unanswered goals to build a comfortable — and what proved an insurmountable — lead. W.T. Woodson was led offensively by Ross Fernandez (four goals) and also got solid work in goal from keeper Stephen Colangelo, both of whom were first team all-Liberty District selections.

“Our defense was lights out, especially in the beginning,” Fernandez said. “T.J. really did not have many quality shots.”

Although the Colonials were eliminated, their first-round victory over South Lakes qualified them for the upcoming Northern Region tournament, where they will enter as the fourth seed from the Liberty District.

In Monday’s second match-up, Langley defeated Madison, 14-10, on the strength of a whopping seven goals from Ryan Ningard.

However, the game will unfortunately likely be remembered for the controversy that ensued in the fourth quarter. With about 7 minutes remaining in the game, a Madison player rammed into the Saxon goalie and an on-field fight ensued.

Two Madison players — a midfielder and a defensemen —  were ejected, as well a Langley player. All three players will likely be suspended for one game (either the district championship game or the first-round of the upcoming Northern Region tournament) and Liberty District officials will look at a video tape of the incident to determine if any further suspensions will be handed out.

“I’m very disappointed that we had that problem,” Langley Coach Earl Brewer said. “I hope that we’ve learned a lesson from all of this.”

Added Ningard: “We try to look out for one another. But we simply lost our cool.”

After the ejections, Langley retained a one-man advantage for three minutes and took advantage of the situation, scoring three consecutive goals to turn a narrow, two-goal lead into a more comfortable, 14-9 advantage.

Although Langley will likely be shorthanded in the championship game, the Saxons say they are still confident they match-up well with W.T. Woodson, which won the regular-season meeting, 11-9.

“We need to move the ball [against Woodson],” Ningard said. “Our defense also needs to tighten up and pass the ball better.”

Varsity Softball: Stone Bridge 4, Langley 2

By Angela Watts

** Look below the story to find a video player filled with dozens of highlights from Tuesday’s games, including two towering home runs — a solo shot by Langley senior Jam Mowery and a grand slam by Stone Bridge junior Ashley Gardner.

With two Stone Bridge runners already on base in the top of the third inning Tuesday at Langley and Bulldogs’ standout senior catcher Kayla Lechler at bat, Saxons’ Coach Bob Morrow made the decision to intentionally walk the hard-hitting Lechler to load the bases and bring clean-up hitter Ashley Gardner to the plate.

“Kayla is a great hitter, but we did it, primarily, because it sets up the force play,” Morrow explained. “And I know Ashley is a great hitter, too … but I was hoping to pitch her low, get a ground ball and the force out. But we made a mistake and the ball got up — and you can’t do that against a No. 4 hitter.”

Langley sophomore pitcher Brooke Brown, who otherwise threw a solid game, got high and inside on a pitch to Gardner and the junior slugger made her pay for it.

Brown blasted a four-run shot to left field that found its way over the fence in a hurry, marking the first grand slam home run of her high school career.

Ultimately, it was all the offense the Bulldogs needed in what proved a 4-2 victory over the host Saxons on their Senior Night.

“Kayla is good,” said first-year Stone Bridge Coach Mike Skinner. “But Ashley is a good hitter, too. So you have to pick your poison. There’s not much you can do there. Kayla is such a great hitter, though, that I probably would have done the same thing in that situation.”

Added Lechler: “I always want to hit, but it’s also a good feeling knowing not only that they respect me out there, but that there are people coming up behind me that can hit. They just gave me a walk … but I knew there was someone coming up that they probably shouldn’t have walked me to get to.”

Lechler said as soon as she heard the ball come off Gardner’s bat, she knew it was gone.

“I was already on second base,” Lechler said, laughing. “And I realized as soon as I got there that maybe I should have tagged up? But I knew it was going out.”

Gardner’s game-winning shot was the second home run of the game. Langley third baseman Jam Mowery — one of 10 Saxon seniors honored in pre-game Senior Night festivities — led off the first inning for Langley with a solo home run over that also sailed over the left field fence. Langley, which stranded 12 base runners in the game, got its only other score in the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Kim McMasters.

“I thought we played real well, we just had one bad inning,” Morrow said. “We made one bad pitch. But I wouldn’t say that cost us the game because we had runners on all the time and our hitters didn’t come through. We left 12 runners on base. And with that combination … you just can’t win ballgames that way.”

Stone Bridge junior pitcher Cassie Phillips went the distance for the Bulldogs in the circle and did a good job keeping the vaunted Langley batters off-balance all night. Phillips twice worked her way out of situations in which Langley had a runner on third base — and did so both times against the heart of the Saxons’ line-up — utilizing a combination of fastballs, curveballs and change-ups.

“Kayla did a great job calling the pitches,” Phillips said. “We were just trying to keep them off-balance. That was our basic strategy. We wanted to make their hitters hit and let our defense play. And it worked tonight.”

Boys’ Soccer: Stone Bridge 3, Langley 0

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check below the story for highlights of Fridays game**

Stone Bridge remains undefeated and tied with Thomas Jefferson atop the Liberty District regular-season standings after beating Langley, 3-0, on its Senior Night on Friday.

The Bulldogs played the defending Virginia AAA state champion Colonials to a tie earlier this year. If both teams remain unbeaten in district play, the top seed and a first-round bye in the Liberty District tournament will be determined by a coin flip.

Stone Bridge got Friday’s match-up started in quick fashion when senior midfielder Eric Skogerboe scored just after a throw in at the four minute mark. Then 10 minutes into the second half the Bulldogs got on the board again when sophomore Mike Herndon beat Thomas Jefferson’s keeper on a rebound from a Skogerboe shot.

The final goal was put in by University of Columbia-bound senior Ronnie Shaban, who beat two Colonials defenders after a corner kick by Nick Giffen.

Stone Bridge will finish its regular-season schedule next week then it travels to face Loudoun County rival Broad Run on Monday and Madison on Thursday. Langley will travel to McLean on Tuesday. The Liberty District tournament begins May 12.
