Despite the wet weather that soaked the course during the final races of the night, Brentsville District High School celebrated another successful Under the Lights Brentsville Relays cross country meet. The 8th annual event featured 63 cross country teams from Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland.

The six-hour event featured 12 different races, from high school varsity to elementary school races.

As expected, the Midlothian girls dominated throughout the day, winning the Women’s “B” race to start the day and winning the women’s “A” race by almost two minutes at the end of the night. The Mountain View boys took the top spot in the men’s “B” meet, while the Atlee boys won the men’s “A” meet.

The Northern Region brought 20 teams to the event, with the Lake Braddock (49:47) girls celebrating a second-place finish during the women’s “A” meet. The Herndon girls were right behind the Bruins with a third-place finish. The West Potomac (51:10) girls finished ninth, while Langley (52:15), Robinson (52:53), T.C. Williams (53:09), Westfield (53:44) and South County (53:46) made it in the top 20.

On the boys side for the Northern Region, Robinson (42:04) finished strong in third place, while South County (42:20), W.T. Woodson (42:33), and Lake Braddock (42:39) all finished in the top ten.

Loudoun County’s Potomac Falls had the best finish of all Northern Virginia teams on the boys side, finishing second with a time of 42:04, 36 seconds behind first-place Atlee. The Panther boys took the overall meet boy’s title with top-five finishes in all three races.

Other top Loudoun County boys teams include Dominion (12th, 43:04) and Heritage (30th, 44:57). Potomac Falls, Dominion and Heritage also brought the top three Loudoun County girls teams, with the Panthers finishing 14th with a time of 52.29, the Titans finishing 31st with a time of 55:49 and the Pride right behind them with a 32nd-place finish with a time of 55:52.

Host school Brentsville took fourth in the women’s “A” meet with a time of 50:04, while the Brentsville boys took 15th with a time of 43:19.

As expected, Osbourn Park brought the top girl’s team from AAA Prince William County, placing seventh with a time of 51:00. Forest Park finished 25th (54:33), while Woodbridge took 35th (56:18). On the boy’s side for AAA Prince William, Osbourn Park finished 17th (43:39), while Forest Park took 24th (44:19).

Football: The Week Ahead

Northern Region Football Preview — Week 3

Game of the Week
South County (1-1) at No. 4 Edison (2-0)
7:30 p.m., Friday
*Game will be covered by Angela Watts — check back Saturday morning for a story, photos and highlights!

The Eagles and Stallions have met every year since South County’s varsity program began in 2005. In their three all-time meetings, Edison holds a 2-1 advantage, outscoring the Stallions by a collective 102-37.

Last year, Edison defeated South County, 46-7, and the Eagles rushed for 431 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 9.0 yards per attempt. But only 87 yards of those rushing yards return for this year’s game.

This season, the Stallions appear ready to improve on last year’s first-round playoff exit, as they lost to defending Virginia AAA Division 6 state champion Westfield by just two points in their home-opener before defeating Falls Church by 20 on the road.

But Edison is coming of an emotional, 35-34, road win at West Springfield. And quarterback Levi Barber had his best stretch so far as a starter in the second half of that game, going 5-for-7 passing with a score, while carrying seven times for 68 yards and orchestrating the game-winning drive.

The Eagles have an affinity for the big play with four touchdowns coming on special teams and Angus Harper has a 67-yard touchdown run to his name. But the Stallions have been extremely stingy defensively, allowing only two plays of over 20 yards this year — both carries by the Northern Region rushing-leader, Westfield running back Jordan Anderson.

Potential Classics
No. 7 West Springfield (0-2) at No. 8 Robinson (1-1) — 7:30 p.m., Friday

Although West Springfield enters Week 3 still without a win, they have only been outscored by 7.5 points per game. And both losses have come to teams ranked in the top four, including No. 1 Stone Bridge on the road. Robinson’s only loss, likewise, came at No. 1 Stone Bridge with a slightly-more lopsided 49-7 margin.

Last season, the Spartans came into the game versus the then-No. 3 Rams with a defense that had allowed 76 points through two games and Robinson was expected to control the clock with running back Peter Ferrara. But West Springfield’s defense played statistically its best game since October 2004, sacking Ram quarterback Timmy Meier six times — Spartan defensive end John Lockwood had three sacks — in a 21-7 win.

This season, the Spartans have allowed 77 points through two games and the Rams have a chance to avenge both last year’s aforementioned road loss and their season-ending, 30-28 defeat in the Northern Region Division 6 semifinals. If Robinson scores the home win, West Springfield — which began the season No. 2 in our poll — will start the season 0-3.

No. 9 Yorktown (2-0) at No. 6 West Potomac (2-0) — 7:30 p.m., Friday
*Game will be covered by Jimmy Thomas — check back Saturday morning for a story, photos and highlights!

Last season at Yorktown, the Patriots turned the ball over five times in their own territory in the first half and the Wolverines turned those into five touchdowns to lead 35-0 at half time.

West Potomac running back Josh Wells carried for 180 of his 192 yards in the first half and scored all three of his touchdowns in the first 12 minutes, 12 seconds of the game. And Wolverine quarterback Cole Walter threw for three touchdowns on just 17 attempts with no interceptions, which ran his touchdown to interception ratio to 10:1 through three weeks.

This year, through two games, Walter has thrown for eight touchdowns and no picks.

This match-up also features two of the better athletes around in West Potomac wide receiver Kristian Rodriguez and Yorktown athlete Kyle Toulouse.

Despite the one-sided West Potomac win last year, these teams have split their last six meetings. And only one time since 2000 has the winning team scored less than 39 points. Expect fireworks between these rising 2-0 teams.

Other Games to Watch

Concorde District

Headed into the season Oakton looks to be the favorite with returning squad members Becca Kassabian, Jenna Cahill, Lanie Smith and Jessie Daley leading the team. All are in the Top 10 returning athletes to the Concorde District this year. Add in Kelly Jones, Lannie Smith and Allison Gregor and the Cougars could be hard to beat this season.

Herndon, with Hiruni Wijayaratne, is not far behind Oakton in the Concorde District and the championship meet could see eight of the first ten positions being filled with Herndon and Oakton athletes. Herndon also has Carly Kulik, Carolyn Hennessey and Laura Ortel who can run with Oakton’s main pack and Jessica Wilds and Mehnaz Haq will displace other teams fourth and fifth runners.

Chantilly, with Virginia AAA runner-up Lia DiValentin, is the favorite for the third spot in the Concorde Division. DiValentin is also the defending Northern Region and Concorde District champion. Backing her up will be Hilary Baird, Rachel Grochowski, Jessica Stillwell and Kacey Norwood.

Other runners in the district that could be Top 10 finishers are Fairfax’s Frances Dowd, Robinson’s Stephanie Bray, Amanda Nevlud and Ashley Swim and Centreville’s Jenna Richmond.

Patriot District

Lake Braddock will be the favorites going into the season and also for finishing in the top three at the state championships. The Bruins will have sub 5:00 1,600-runner Liana Epstein leading the squad. Lake Braddock defeated West Springfield last year by 11 points and have the horses to back up Epstein. Casey Larnder, Nadeen Khoury, Amanda Parker and Kelly Hagan all have gone under 12:00 in the 3,200 and that pack will be hard to beat.

West Springfield also returns a solid top three in Alex Watt, Anna Barber and Pagie Kvartunas, but graduation meant they will have to look down into their junior varsity to find runners to help fill out the squad. Lisa Williams, Kellee Farris and Hannah Gumpf will be the ladies the Spartans will be counting on to challenge Lake Braddock.

West Potomac finished third last year, but lost most of its team to graduation. Kelsey Rosenberg, Amelia Cooksey and Catilin Corcoran will be looking to keep the Wolverines in the hunt.

Madeline Willner of South County is the top returning runner in the Patriot District this year, but will have to find support to keep her team in the fourth spot this year. Nicole Lewis, Emma Ork and Sania Ahmad are the other returning runners this year.

Sarah Bryan of T.C. Williams and Kelsey Fish of Hayfield are two other runners who could break into the Top 10.

National District

Yorktown was the district champion last year and looks to be the favorite again with four out of the top 14 returning runners. Lindsey Hunt is the top returning runner, but the Patriots also have Madeline Meyer, Lydia Carpenter, Kara McInroy and Lesey Coia returning.

Edison looks to be the next best with Myah Hicks, Emily Swain, Ashlen Burtz, Betel Yosef and Anna McMullen leading the team.

Falls Church has Audrey May, Arianna Tyner, Riley Lousen and Niki Rutledge to lead them as the favorites for the third team in the district.

Other runners to look for are Washington-Lee’s Annmarie Hansen and Cynthia Carson and Stuart’s Victoria Fowler.

Liberty District

Thomas Jefferson won the district title last year with 40 points over W.T. Woodson and Langley, but the race should be much closer this year. The Colonials return Lisa Junta, Sarah Watson and Stephanie Marzen as their top runners. There is a slight dropoff after that to Olivia Jeffers and Katherine Bailey, but with a large group of ladies to draw from, the competition should be enough to keep Thomas Jefferson on top.

Langley looks like the team with the best chance to overtake Thomas Jefferson this season. The Saxons return Lauren Shaw, Carolyn Shaw, Amanda Steffey and Ishanna Laszlo as their top four runners. Hannah Liberson gives them a good fifth runner, but they will need to develop some depth.

W.T. Woodson has depth, but about a four-minute spread between their first and seventh runner. The Cavaliers return Aaren Pastor, Carrie Payne, Sarah Haight, Isabel Greenberg and Hannah Martins.

The other runners expected to be in the Top 10 are Stephanie Paradis of Stone Bridge, the top returning runner in the Liberty District, and Devin Ericksen of South Lakes.

Boys’ Cross County: Northern Region Preview

Concorde District

Oakton last year won the Concorde District and this year should be a repeat. The Cougars have Brian and Heal Hendricks coming back along with Chris Weil and Patrick Fulghum. On top of that they get Fairfax transfer Dante Morales, and will be hard to beat this season.

The Robinson boys were second last year to Oakton in the Concorde District, finishing 35 points behind, and this year they are expected to repeat that second-place finish. They have two strong runners in Stuart Steen and Jared Berman, but will need to find three others to fill out their squad if they expect to close the gap to Oakton.

Other runners from the Concorde Division that could challenge for a Top 10 position is Chantilly’s Chris Foley (fourth last year in the district meet), Westfield’s Jack Canatsey, Kevin Halsey and Matthew Anderson, Centreville’s Yazid Zouaimia and Mattson Heiner and Fairfax’s Kevin Dowd and Luke Tonia.

Westfield, Fairfax and Chantilly will battle it out for third with Herndon, which brings back much of its varsity team from last year, working its way into the hunt.

Patriot District

West Potomac captured last year’s Patriot District by four points over Lake Braddock, but will have to work hard this year to repeat that finish. The Wolverines have the depth, but will have to overcome the Bruins’ top three in order to pull out the win. West Potomac returns Khoki Bernier, Derwin Kinston, Peter Coffey, Thomas Hammond, Alex Triplett and another eight runners than ran under 18:10 last year.

Lake Braddock, with its top three runners of John Cruz, Alex Clark and Daniel Tobin, will be hard to beat. Their next runner is way back behind West Potomac’s top seven and will have to break up their pack. Luke Shol, Matt Klein, Madison Singer-Riske and Darren Sokvary will all be working to keep the title at Lake Braddock.

South County can not be counted out of the mix with Brett Mandeville, Matt Karwel, Thomas Keefe, Marcus Jones and David Schmidt all in the Top 15 returners from the Patriot District.

Other runners who will be in the mix in the district race this season will be West Springfield’s Daniel Tobin and John Locke, Annandale’s Scott Plunkett and Charles Simpson and T.C. Williams’ Spencer Beasley and Daniel Ackerman.

National District

Edison wiped up on the district last year, taking 1-2-4-5-7 to win with 19 points. Four of those five runners are back with Leoule and Tihut Degfae leading the team. The twins have been seen frequently in summer road races, so their fitness level should make them ready for a state title run. Joining them are Spencer Rodriguez and Jonathan Iredell from last year’s top five. David Bulir, Paul Riehl and Robert Grooms will lend credible enough support to keep the Eagles at the top of the pack.

Washington-Lee finished third last year, but looks to move up a notch this year. The Generals return Luke Malley, Brian McGrail, Steve San Miguel, John Shehan and Marc Patton from last year’s team and should have enough to move into second.

Yorktown was second last year, but lost much to graduation. The Patriots’ top returner is John Papvizas but they also have Dylan McGowan and Carl Hurtado to lead the team.

Other runners who could break into the Top 10 are Stuart’s Sam Carolus-Hager, Falls Church’s Alex Howe and Wakefield’s Tim Cossey.

Liberty District

Thomas Jefferson is the defending Virginia AAA state champion, and last year scored a perfect 15 at the Liberty District meet. They lost four of their top runners to graduation or transfer, but still have the troops to get them back to the state meet. Joey Jachowski, Tim Galvin, Max Dreo, Alex Witko and Colin Maloney are the runners whose chore it is to bring the Colonials back to the awards stand in November.

W.T. Woodson placed second last year in the district and also advanced to the state championships, but lost a number of runners to graduation. The Cavaliers return Ethan Katz, Alex Miller, Joshua Chartier, Cameron Key and Mike Davis, all of whom ran sub 18:00 last year. But Woodson will have to find some much-needed depth in order to keep the team in the hunt for the distirct title this year.

After those two teams, the chore is to find teams that can put a fourth and fifth runner near the middle of the pack to score enough points to put them on the awards stand. McLean and South Lakes look to be the teams with the best chance.

Runners to watch in the Liberty District this year to challenge for a Top 10 spot include Lucas Rooney of Marshall, Sam Radele and Joe Thompson of McLean and Will Sickenberger of South Lakes.

Girls’ Volleyball: Herndon 3, Langley 1

Herndon needed two games in extra points but defeated defending Northern Region champion — and Virginia AAA state runner-up —  Langley in four games on Tuesday.

“I am really proud of how they hung in there and got the big points,” Hornets Coach Pat Smith said. “They went
out there and said, ‘Hey, its do-or-die right now.’ They hung in there and really stepped up.”

Falling down early the Hornets stole the opening game, taking their first lead at 26-25 and winning the game on the following point.

The second game was back-and-forth as the two squads were tied six times and locked at 13 before Langley won seven of the next eight points taking the game, 25-20.

Herndon jumped out to a 20-13 lead in Game 3 when the Saxons mounted another charge, as setter Nicki Hero served five consecutive points and hitter Logan Sebastian added four kills to pull the score even at 25.

The Hornets, however, never faltered as middle blocker Steph Drahozal seemed to tip the ball over her bigger counterparts in what seemed to be all the right spots. The Hornets went on to win the game in extra points, 29-27.

“[Drahozal] figured out that they were all bigger than she was and she used those tips to get to either side of those big blocks,” Smith said.

With their confidence soaring, Game 4 was all Herndon. Middle Blocker Hannah Vick had four winners and her team went on to win the game, 25-20, to seal the match at three-games-to-one.

“It was good to see our team run as much offense as they did,” Smith said. “I hope that this win will inspire the girls to keep working at that”

Football: No. 4 Chantilly 21, Langley 14

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check Below the Story for a Video Player With Complete Video Highlights of Mondays Game**

It didn’t matter that Chantilly’s season-opener against Langley was moved from Friday to Monday because of rain. It didn’t matter that it would be played on Labor Day because of the switch. It didn’t matter that the home team got off to a slow — and sloppy — start. And it certainly didn’t matter that the first day of school starts bright-and-early Tuesday morning.

Despite it all, the “Purple Platoon” was out and in mid-season form Monday night and cheered as their beloved Chargers, behind all-state running back Torrian Place, defeated visiting Langley, 21-14.

Pace rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on just 18 carries, an average of 7.5 yards per touch.

The Saxons struck first, however, when senior fullback Derek Eklund plunged across the goal line from 2-yards out in the first quarter to cap an eight-play drive after a Charger fumble. Chantilly turned the ball over again on its second possession, but the Charger defense held and forced a punt.

The Chargers then tied the game with 8 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the first half when junior Roger Strittmatter found junior Mike Farris wide open from 27 yards out for the touchdown.

“He made good decisions throwing the ball,” Chantilly Coach Mike Lalli said about his first-year starting quarterback. “Most of his passes were where they needed to be. He made the right reads. He did a good job for his first start.”

Langley’s offense stalled on the ensuing possession, turning the ball over on downs despite what looked to be a promising, 12-play drive. Chantilly took advantage of the opportunity, taking over at its own 32-yard line and scoring four minutes later when Pace took it in from seven yards out give the Chargers a 14-7 lead at half time.

The first possession of the second half is when things became a bit unusual.

Chantilly was forced to punt on 4th-and-8 on its opening possession. But Langley was flagged for having too many men on the field, making the Chargers’ fourth-down play a little more manageable. So the Charger offense came back on the field and opened a hole for Pace, who scampered 46 yards into the end zone.

That run, though, was called back for holding. Unfortunately for the Saxons, a personal foul was called on them as well. With the holding penalty a 10-yard infraction and the personal foul being a 15-yard infraction, Chantilly was awarded a first down.

Four plays later Pace was off again, this time going 20-yards — with no laundry on the field — to push the Chargers’ lead to 21-7.

After that exchange there was still over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter, leaving plenty of time for a Langley comeback. On the ensuing drive the Saxons marched 74 yards on a staggering, 20-play drive that ending with a 4-yard strike from senior quarterback Danny Pritchett to senior tight end Chris Sievers.

The drive ate up almost 11 minutes of the clock.

The Saxons defense held on the next two Charger possessions, but the offense was unable to mount the fourth-quarter drive they needed.

“It’s one of those wins where you are thankful you won, but you are a little upset because you didn’t perform as well as you would have liked,” Lalli said. “Hopefully we can clean up the little things like the dropped balls and the penalties. Those types of things happen in your first game.”
