Boys’ Lacrosse: No. 5 Langley 16, South Lakes 1

Submitted by Langley Lacrosse

Sixteen goals from 12 different Saxons hoisted unbeaten Langley to an emphatic home win over a visiting South Lakes squad this past weekend.

Saxon attacker Ryan Ningard delivered four goals and middie Alex Devlin got a pair in a rare Saturday evening engagement. Langley’s Brian Clubb, Matt Cronin, Jack Lundeen, Kyle Maida, and Ryan Miller added to their respective goal hauls for the season while Sean Ahearn, Jack Sandusky, Trevor Shafran, Brett Simone and Frank Winston opened their scoring accounts for the 2009 campaign.

Matt Shinrock provided the one goal for the Seahawks, who fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in district competition.

The Saxons (9-0, 5-0) thrived at the very start in their first opportunity this season to entertain a home crowd in a Liberty District match-up.  Ningard initiated the goal scoring when he fired in with less than three minutes gone in the contest. Lundeen doubled the margin for Langley four minutes later.

The Saxon lead was cut in half soon after, the result of a cunning, unassisted scoring effort by South Lakes’ attackman Shinrock. A short-range, seemingly safe back-pass that Langley defender Thomas Robinson intended for his goalie, Galen Kuney, never made it past the alert Shinrock, who jumped in at the right moment to intercept. The Seahawk then made the most of an unprotected cage to claim a quick goal for his side.

Saxon attacker Maida restored the two-goal advantage for the hosts with little more than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, which ended 3-1 in Langley’s favor.

The earlier miscue by the Saxon defense, however, was well-forgotten as the game progressed and the score sheet began to take on somewhat the appearance of a roll-call for the Langley roster. During second quarter play, both Ninguard and middie Devlin added two more goals while middie Simone and attacker Winston each got their first of the season to carry the Saxons to the relative safety of a 9-1 lead at half time. Simone struck from distance while Winston’s menacing presence in front of net distracted the South Lakes’ defense allowing Lundeen’s feed-in pass to arrive in the goal area only to carom in past the busy Seahawk goalie, Ricky Stout.

Ninguard added his fourth of the game midway through the third quarter, followed less than a half minute later by a left-side shot from longstickman Shafran that also found the back of the net for the Langley defender’s first of the season. Clubb scored his second of the year late in the quarter while freshman attacker Ahearn set the running clock in motion with a half minute still remaining in the third period, getting his first-ever goal as a Saxon.

The fourth quarter saw goals from middies Cronin and Miller as well as a first-of-the-season strike from attacker Sandusky, who used a fine reflex shot to convert a well-placed pass from teammate Ahearn.

D.C. Beltway Area: Top 10 Boys Lax

Boys Lacrosse Top 10
*Rankings and records as of April 15

1.    Georgetown Prep (12-2)
The Little Hoyas responded from a loss to Delbarton (N.J.) with a 14-3 whooping of Good Counsel. They have yet to be challenged by any Washington area team.

2.    Landon (9-3)
The defending IAC champions got a big win in convincing fashion over St. Albans. They nearly shut out the Bulldogs.

3.    St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (6-4)
The Saints lost to Georgetown Prep and Landon but could have pulled out a victory over the Bears. St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes is always an upset waiting to happen.

4.    St. Albans (10-3)
The Bulldogs struggled offensively against Landon. Before that they had won six straight games.

5.    Langley (8-0)
Led by senior middie Alex Devlin and senior goalie Galen Kuney, Langley has jumped to an 8-0 record for the first time in school history.

6.    Wootton (6-0)
The Patriots have beaten just about every top team in Montgomery County (sans Whitman) and pulled out a big overtime win over WCAC county rival Good Counsel.

7.    Huntingtown (5-1)
Two words: Peter Athens. Boosted by the St. Mary’s-Annapolis transfer, the Hurricanes are a force to be reckoned with in Southern Maryland.

8.    DeMatha (7-4)
The defending WCAC champions are a big puzzling. They beat traditional conference challengers St. Mary’s Ryken and Gonzaga but fell by seven goals to Paul VI.

*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Osbourn Park (6-0-0)
The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 21-2 this season, including a 3-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (April 1) and a 3-0 win over No. 6 Woodbridge (March 25). Osbourn Park hosts No. 3 Battlefield on Friday.
2. Robinson (4-1-1)
The Rams are the defending Virginia AAA State runners up and return both goalkeeper Samir Badr from a year-long stint at the U.S. National Team academy in Bradenton, Fl, and midfielder Connor Alexander from a back injury that cost him the entirety of last season. Robinson beat No. 4 Westfield, 3-1 on the road, on March 27.
3. Battlefield (5-0-0)
The Bobcats have outscored their opponents 16-4 this year, including a 2-1 win over No. 8 Osbourn (March 20). A marquee road match-up with No. 1 Osbourn Park looms this Friday.
4. Westfield (6-1-0)
The only Bulldog blemish is a 3-1 home loss to No. 2 Robinson. Westfield is the highest scoring team in the D.C. area, having posted 32 goals in its seven games, and its next three opponents have a combined five wins.
5. Edison (6-0-1)
The Eagles drew, 2-2, with No. 6 Woodbridge over Spring Break and have the second-highest goals per game average in the Northern Region. Edison faces a 16-day lay-off between matches, though, with its next game not until April 22 against Falls Church.

Against teams outside of the top three-ranked teams, the Eagles are 5-0-0 and have outscored opponents 21-2. Osbourn’s pair of losses to Osbourn Park, 3-1, and Battlefield, 2-1, are its only two blemishes. The Eagles have a rematch with Bobcats on April 21.

Langley Registers 10-Goal Win Over Potomac School at West Springfield Tournamen

Submitted by Langley Lacrosse

A five-goal night for middie Alex Devlin paced Langley to a 13-3 win over Potomac School in the second day of play at the West Springfield Spring Break Invitational. Six other Saxons also scored – attacker Ryan Ningard and middie Charlie Scharfen each got a pair while Matt Cronin, Jeremy Kuney, Kyle Maida and Tom Robinson netted one apiece.

The Panthers got goals from Zach Barsness, Tristan Dellar and Lee Goehring.

Langley goalies Galen Kuney and Ryan Long combined for 12 saves while Potomac keeper John Henry Strong was credited with nine.

The Saxons charged to a 5-0 first quarter lead with five different players — middies Devlin, Kuney and Scharfen, attacker Ningard and defender Robinson — getting name and number on the game’s score log.

Panther defender Dellar pulled one back at the very start of the second quarter, but a pair from Devlin, a second goal from Scharfen and one from attacker Maida before half time got Langley to nine and essentially beyond Potomac’s reach for the contest.

Barsness struck with just over a minute left in the first half set the scoreline at 9-2 for the intermission.

A less active second half saw Devlin collecting his fourth and fifth goals of the evening, Ningard getting his second, and F/O middie Cronin putting in the last of the evening for the Saxons.

Goehring completed the scoreline with a goal with little more than four minutes remaining in the game.

Jack Lundeen’s Three Goals Lead Langley Lacrosse Past Loudoun Valley

Submitted by Langley Lacrosse

A Jack Lundeen hat-trick, followed by goals from Alex Devlin, Ryan Ningard and Charlie Scharfen, powered the unbeaten Saxons over potent Loudoun Valley in a 6-5 thriller this past Wednesday afternoon to close out the West Springfield Spring Break Invitational lacrosse tournament for both teams.

A late pair from Chris Rabung, in addition to earlier strikes from Sean Dacey, Dylan Zook and Chris Roos, accounted for scoring by the Vikings, now 4-2 overall this season and 2-1 for the three-day tournament.

Both teams got quality performances out of their goalkeepers, with each making a number of stellar saves throughout the riveting contest. Langley goalie Galen Kuney was credited with 12 saves while Loudoun Valley’s netminder, Alex Sharrer, turned back 11 Saxon shots.

Early play featured cautious probing in attack, solid defensive posture and sharp goalkeeping at both ends of the field, and while each side found some promising paths to getting the opener, the first quarter ended scoreless.

The Vikings were the better for the breakthrough that finally came early in the second quarter when Dacey pounced, depositing into the upper right corner of Kuney’s net to give his team the lead. The Saxons did not wait long, however, to serve up a reply. Lundeen provided the first of his three for the afternoon shortly after with a close-in, right-hand shot to level the score. Six minutes later, the Langley attacker produced a second goal, this time with a left-side delivery, to give the Saxons their first lead of the contest.

The game assumed the flavor of a real dogfight when Loudoun Valley scored on each side of the half time break to re-take the lead at 3-2. The equalizer was the handiwork of Zook, who slipped one in on a fine diving effort with just :21 seconds remaining in the half. Roos then put Loudoun Valley back on top less than four minutes into the second half off of a run into attack that ended with his flicking in at close range past Kuney for the goal.
But Langley’s Lundeen was still in the hunt, and just over two minutes later he converted an extra-man-opportunity to tie matters at 3. Beyond capping the hat-trick, the third Lundeen tally served as appetizer for the three-goal Saxon entree that followed to put the winners at six, which proved to be only just enough at the final whistle.

Devlin got the first of the three — and the lead for Langley — with little less than five minutes left in the third quarter. And just when the 4-3 scoreline was looking to hold up for the start of the final quarter, Ningard popped up to fire in from point-blank range before third quarter time had expired. The Langley attacker was set up nicely by a quick feed from fellow attacker Ethan Bailey, who had gained possession on a scramble during a breakout attempt by the Vikings that left goalie Sharrer without longstick protection at the key moment.

Scharfen rifled in at the 7:38 mark of the fourth quarter for what proved the eventual game-winner for the Saxons, who improved to 8-0 overall for the first time in school history.

Despite facing a three-goal deficit going deep into the final quarter, the Vikings persisted, their energetic play conveying belief that negotiations were still open and alive for them to recover and ****** a win. Loudoun Valley attacker Rabung netted with 2:21 remaining when he was left completely unmarked in front of goal allowing him to turn in a crisp feed from fellow attacker Collin Kirby.

With about two minutes remaining and play for both teams becoming more frantic, Langley’s Ningard was caught in possession in his own defensive zone. The resulting turnover soon led to Kirby connecting yet again with a wide open Rabung, who promptly delivered his second of the game to cut the gap to one.

In the end, however, the Saxons were able to close the deal in their favor, helped in part by a late Viking penalty that eased pressure on Langley’s tiring defense in the closing moments.

Saxons Earn Come-From-Behind Win in Tournament Opener

Submitted by Langley Lacrosse

The Saxons conceded the game’s first five goals before blasting to a persuasive, 12-7 victory over an energetic Broad Run squad in the West Springfield Spring Break Invitational lacrosse tournament action on April 6.

An 11-goal run — including nine in the second half — was a deserved reward for a bullish Langley side that thoroughly dominated after the break, in stark contrast to being so over-matched during much of the opening half one could easily have thought the Saxons had shown up at the wrong venue for their night’s activity.

Not to take anything away from the determined Spartans, now 3-2 in all competitions. Their display throughout part one of this two-act presentation was nothing but superb — the resolute defending, the sharp goalkeeping, the lethal efficiency on the fast-break that yielded splendid goal production in the early stages.

Broad Run found itself on the good side of a 5-0 scoreline that arrived within what seemed like a mere blink of the eye against a team that had yet to taste defeat this season.

In fact, the Saxons, who struggled mightily just to get the ledger to 5-2 by half time, had not even fallen behind at any time in five previous games and had allowed opponents on average only 2.6 goals per game.

But whatever Coach Earl Brewer had to say in his intermission helped render that bleak first half a distant memory.

A complete turnaround transpired, and the scoring script for Act Two in part read — Ryan Ningard, Ningard again (shorthanded), Ethan Bailey, Bailey, Charlie Scharfen, Jack Lundeen, Alex Devlin, Troy Scharfen, Bailey, Jeremy Kuney, Devlin, Ningard.

Langley’s comeback act, however, was more than just a monologue of unanswered goal-scoring.

It was end-product as well of goals consistently denied Broad Run in the key moments by Saxon keeper Galen Kuney, the load of face-offs won by Langley middie Matt Cronin after F/O middie Joey Byrne went off with a leg injury midway in the second quarter, the ball possession created and maintained by Saxon longstickmen Trevor Shafran, Tom Robinson, Brendan Dwyer, Joey Cortina and Kas Semancik and dangerous Spartan fast-breaks disrupted by Joey Collins, Kyle Maida and, well, just about every Saxon on the field at the time.
